Volkwagen’s MKV GTI has been met with almost entirely positive reviews in the US. This summer, the MKV GTI’s replacement will be hitting US shores, and VW says the car is better in almost every appreciable way. That remains to be seen, but the Mk6 GTI will be landing at US VW dealerships this summer, so get ready.
You read right! It takes a rare breed to take a perfectly working car and chop it up for a project. Jon Balch did exactly that. Jon took his MKIV Volkswagen Jetta Wagon and went to work striping her down to her shell. In store to replace all he took out… the vital workings of an 04 Volkswagen R32!
What makes this story so unique is that, Jon is no godly mechanic. Jon is a regular guy with a decent working mechanical knowledge. He doesn’t have years of experience as a mechanic, he hasn’t ripped apart vws and put them back together. Jon did one thing, that has commonly been the difference between success and failure on a project. He researched… and he did lots of it.
This custom built 2000 VR6 Turbo jetta was put together over at Apex Tuning out of Raleigh, NC. Along with all of the goodies, is some killer software custom tuned by Jeff Atwood of C2 Motorsports. This custom VR has a beautiful powerband similar to the stock curve and manages to put down 351whp and 362 ft-lb tq. Coupled with some nice looks, compliments of an R32 front end sawp and an all black leather interior to round it off, she is the full package. Normally, this award from Green Car Journal magazine is a sleeper award. Part of the problem is that there can be no repeat winner. Last year, there were so few candidates that the award went to the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid… what??
